The Story Behind Healing Waters Lodge
Before it welcomed anglers from around the world, the heart of Healing Waters Lodge was a place of comfort and care for a small Montana town. Built in 1891, the building first served as Sheridan’s original hospital—a quiet refuge on Main Street where healing began long before fly rods ever graced the nearby rivers. In the mid-1980s, this piece of history was carefully moved to the banks of a peaceful piece of water and lovingly restored. When Greg and Janet Lilly founded Healing Waters Lodge in 1997, they chose a name that honored both the building’s legacy and the quiet, restorative power of fly fishing. Today, the former hospital lives on as two rustically-elegant suites—The Meriwether and The Rookery—where stories are shared, days on the river are remembered, and healing still happens in its own quiet way.
Our Present & Future
In 2023, longtime friends and passionate outdoorsmen Steve Mackey and Scott Gallivan took the helm of Healing Waters Lodge, continuing its legacy while bringing a fresh vision rooted in excellence and shared values. With over 40 years of friendship and a deep appreciation for Montana’s wild places, Steve and Scott are dedicated to creating an experience where world-class fishing meets exceptional hospitality. As Steve often says, “At HWL, we play a team sport”—a philosophy that reflects their commitment to building a cohesive, high-performing team where every member’s contribution is essential and deeply respected. Their leadership emphasizes collaboration, care, and a relentless focus on exceeding guest expectations.
