Winter Conditions and the 2026 Fishing Outlook
With the year winding down and winter settling into Montana’s Ruby Valley, we’re reflecting on another memorable year at Healing Waters Lodge and turning our attention to the adventures ahead in 2026. This quieter season invites gratitude for time well spent and anticipation for what’s to come—days on the water, shared meals around the table, and memories yet to be made.
Spring Fishing in Montana: An Underrated Season
As we look toward early 2026, spring remains one of the most overlooked—and rewarding—times to fish Montana’s rivers. According to longtime HWL guide Terry Throckmorton, spring fishing consistently surprises guests with hungry fish, uncrowded water, and productive mid-day windows as temperatures rise.
Spring also offers excellent value, with rates approximately 20% lower than peak season.
For anglers eager to shake off winter and return to the water, it’s an ideal time to experience the lodge.
Fly Fishing Academy: Spring Sessions
For anglers looking to sharpen their skills, our Fly Fishing Academy returns with two spring sessions:
April 12–18, 2026
April 26–May 2, 2026
These immersive programs combine classroom instruction with daily time on the water, focusing on casting, presentation, reading water, and refining overall technique. Academy sessions are offered at preferred rates, providing excellent value for anglers seeking focused improvement.
Early Summer on the Big Hole River
We still have select availability during the first two weeks of June—prime timing for anglers hoping to experience the Big Hole River during the Salmon Fly hatch. While the hatch itself can be difficult to predict, this period consistently produces excellent fishing and offers one of the best opportunities of the year to target large brown trout.
Beyond the Big Hole, early June delivers outstanding fishing across the full range of rivers we fish, making it a dynamic and rewarding time to be on the water.
Suggested: Big Hole River drift boat, close-ups of browns, early summer scenery
Wine Week Returns: Around the World in Four Rivers
We’re pleased to announce our Third Annual Wine Week, taking place July 19–23, 2026. This year’s theme—Around the World in Four Rivers—explores the connection between celebrated wine regions and the trout fisheries they’re known for, with each evening inspired by a different corner of the world.
This marks our first collaboration with renowned wine expert Erica Duecy, who will work closely with our culinary team to curate the week’s wine program. Erica brings a rare blend of deep wine knowledge and storytelling, helping connect what’s in the glass to the places, people, and terroirs that inspire it.
While guests will fish our familiar and beloved local rivers, a global theme will guide the cuisine, pairings, and conversations throughout the week—drawing thoughtful parallels between Montana trout water and some of the world’s great fishing destinations.
Availability for Wine Week is limited, and early inquiries are encouraged.
New for 2026: HWL Summer Fishing Academy
New in 2026, we’re introducing the HWL Summer Fishing Academy, running August 16–20, 2026. This four-night, three-day program is designed for anglers who want to elevate their skills but can’t commit to the traditional six-night academy format.
The curriculum covers casting refinement, fly selection, reading water, and adapting to changing conditions, with daily on-the-water sessions reinforcing classroom instruction. Like our other Academy programs, the Summer Fishing Academy is offered at preferred rates, providing excellent value in a shorter format.
Limited 2026 Smith River Launches Available
A select number of early May and July 2026 Smith River launch windows remain available. For these specific launches, preferred pricing is offered.
If one of these windows aligns with your schedule, we invite you to contact us directly to discuss availability for this iconic wilderness float.
Until the Next Rise
As we close out the year, we’re grateful for the friendships, adventures, and shared moments that made the season so special. We look forward to welcoming both returning and new guests back to our rivers in 2026.
